How to Simplify a Ratio
A ratio compares two quantities. For example, the ratio 20:30 can be simplified by dividing both numbers by their greatest common factor, which is 10.
20 : 30 = 2 : 3
The ratio 2:3 is therefore the simplest form of 20:30.
How to Solve a Proportion
A proportion states that two ratios are equal. For example:
2 : 5 = 8 : x
Using cross multiplication:
2 × x = 5 × 8
Therefore:
x = 20
Ratio Examples
| Original Ratio | Simplified Ratio |
|---|---|
| 10 : 20 | 1 : 2 |
| 15 : 25 | 3 : 5 |
| 20 : 30 | 2 : 3 |
| 50 : 100 | 1 : 2 |
| 75 : 100 | 3 : 4 |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a ratio?
A ratio compares two quantities and shows their relative size. For example, a ratio of 2:3 means that for every 2 units of the first quantity there are 3 units of the second quantity.
How do you simplify a ratio?
Divide both parts of the ratio by their greatest common factor. For example, 12:18 can be divided by 6 to give the simplified ratio 2:3.
Can this calculator use decimal ratios?
Yes. Decimal values can be entered and the calculator will convert them into an equivalent simplified ratio when possible.
What is a proportion?
A proportion is an equation showing that two ratios are equal. If three values are known, the fourth value can be calculated using cross multiplication.
Can I leave any value blank in the proportion calculator?
Yes. Enter exactly three values and leave the value you want to calculate empty.
Does DateCalcHub store my calculations?
No. Calculations are performed directly in your browser and the values entered into this calculator are not stored by the calculator.
