What Is Compound Interest?
Compound interest is interest calculated on both the original amount and the interest that has already been added to the balance.
This means that over time you can earn interest on previous interest, allowing a balance to grow faster than with simple interest.
Compound Interest Example
Suppose you invest $10,000 at an annual interest rate of 5% for 10 years, with interest compounded monthly.
Without additional contributions, the balance will grow because each month’s interest becomes part of the amount used to calculate future interest.
Understanding the Results
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Final Balance | The estimated value at the end of the selected period. |
| Initial Investment | The amount invested at the beginning. |
| Total Monthly Contributions | The total amount added through regular monthly contributions. |
| Total Amount Invested | The initial investment plus all monthly contributions. |
| Total Interest Earned | The estimated growth above the total amount invested. |
Compounding Frequency
Compounding frequency describes how often earned interest is added to the balance. Common frequencies include annually, semiannually, quarterly, monthly, and daily.
With the same stated annual interest rate, more frequent compounding generally produces a slightly higher final balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calculate compound interest without monthly contributions?
Yes. Simply enter 0 for Monthly Contribution.
When are monthly contributions added?
This calculator assumes monthly contributions are made at the end of each month.
Does a higher compounding frequency increase the final balance?
Generally, yes. When all other assumptions are the same, more frequent compounding can result in a slightly higher effective return.
Does this calculator include taxes or investment fees?
No. Taxes, commissions, management fees, account fees, and other costs are not included.
Does the calculator guarantee investment returns?
No. The calculator shows a mathematical projection based on the values entered. Actual investment returns may vary and can be higher or lower.
Does DateCalcHub store my information?
No. The calculation is performed directly in your browser and the values entered into this calculator are not stored by the calculator.
